What Is the Beginner Training Program?
If you've ever walked into a dance class and thought, “Everyone knows what they're doing except me,” you're definitely not alone.
And honestly, that's one of the reasons I created the Beginner Training Program.
I’ve been teaching beginner dance classes for the past six years, and over time I realised just how much I love working with people who are starting from zero.
There’s something so special about watching someone walk into their first class feeling nervous, unsure of themselves, maybe even convinced they have “no rhythm”... and then a few weeks later, seeing them move with confidence.
That little switch is everything.
But I also noticed something was missing.
Learning choreography isn't the same as learning how to dance
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE choreography.
Learning a routine, dancing to your favourite song and finally getting through the whole thing without stopping is such a good feeling.
But when you're brand new to dance, there's a lot happening underneath those steps.
You're trying to understand your body.
You're figuring out where your weight goes.
You're trying to find the beat.
You're learning how to isolate different parts of your body.
You're thinking about your posture, your coordination, your energy...
And at the same time, you're trying to remember what comes after the turn you just forgot.
It can be a lot.
I started noticing that many beginners were learning choreography without really having the tools underneath it.
And that's where I felt there was a gap.
I wanted to create something where we could slow things down, build those foundations properly and give people the tools to feel more comfortable in their own bodies.
That became the Beginner Training Program.
So what actually happens in BTP?
BTP isn't about making you perfect.
It's about helping you understand movement.
We'll work on the foundations that you can take with you into pretty much any dance class.
Things like:
Rhythm and musicality
Basic grooves and movement patterns
Coordination
Isolations
Body control
Weight changes
Dynamics
Levels
Mobility and stretching
Movement quality
Building confidence in your body
Learning how to pick up choreography
Understanding how and why certain movements work
And yes, we'll still dance.
Because we're not here to make learning feel like homework.
We're here to have fun, move our bodies and get better while we're doing it.
We want you to understand the movement, not just copy it
One of the biggest things I wanted BTP to give beginners was the confidence to eventually walk into another dance class and think:
“Okay, I know what I'm doing.”
Not because you know every move.
Not because you're suddenly an amazing dancer.
But because you have a foundation to work from.
Once you understand how to move your body, you can start learning new styles, new choreography and new movements without feeling like you're constantly starting from zero.
That's the part that gets me excited.
Watching things click.
BTP started a little differently
I originally started BTP in 2023, and for the first two years it was a closed/private training programme.
It was something I was able to develop, experiment with and really learn from.
I wanted to understand what beginners actually needed.
Not what I thought they needed as a teacher, but what they were experiencing as people who were learning dance for the first time.
And after those two years, I realised I didn't want to keep it private.
There were so many people who could benefit from having this kind of space to learn.
So in 2025, we opened BTP to the public.
And it's been so special seeing it grow from that little idea into a programme that more people can experience.
Then Lochie joined us
Halfway through 2025, Lochie Brooks joined the programme as co-director and one of our main teachers.
And honestly, it was such a good addition to BTP.
I come from my own dance background and areas of experience, while Lochie brings a huge amount of knowledge from the Hip Hop scene and his own years of training and teaching.
That means we can bring different perspectives into the room and give our students a wider foundation.
Between us, we each have more than 10 years of experience across different areas of dance.
But what matters most to us isn't how many years we've been dancing.
It's being able to take everything we've learned and make it easier for someone else to learn.
Especially someone who is just starting.
You don't need to be “good at dancing”
This is probably the biggest thing I want you to know.
You don't need to have rhythm.
You don't need to be flexible.
You don't need to know any dance terminology.
You don't need to have danced before.
And you definitely don't need to walk into your first class already feeling confident.
That's what we're here for.
You can come in awkward.
You can forget the steps.
You can go the wrong way.
You can laugh at yourself.
You can ask the same question twice.
You can take your time.
That's learning.
And nobody in that room is expecting you to be perfect.
BTP is about more than dance
Of course, you're going to learn how to dance.
But that's not the only reason we created it.
We want you to feel more comfortable taking up space.
We want you to trust your body a little more.
We want you to stop being scared of getting things wrong.
We want you to walk into your next class feeling like you actually belong there.
And hopefully, you'll make some friends along the way too.
Because for us, dance has always been about people.
The people you meet.
The laughs before class.
The “wait, what was that step again?”
The cheering when someone finally gets it.
The feeling of walking out of class a little more confident than when you walked in.
That's what we're really building.
So, is BTP for you?
If you're completely new to dance — yes.
If you've tried choreography classes but still feel like you're missing the basics — yes.
If you want to improve your movement and confidence — yes.
If you've always wanted to dance but haven't known where to start — definitely.
And if you're nervous about coming alone?
Come anyway.
You won't be the only one.
Everyone starts somewhere, and you don't need to have it all figured out before you walk through the door.
You just need to be willing to give yourself a chance.
Come start with us
The Beginner Training Program was created because I genuinely believe beginners deserve a space where they can learn properly, take their time and enjoy the process.
No pressure to be perfect.
No expectation that you should already know what you're doing.
Just good music, good people, proper foundations and a whole lot of dancing.
If you've been waiting for a sign to finally start...
Maybe this is it.
Come as you are.
We'll meet you there.
